I’ve been in a real old bluesy mood lately and have been going between Nina Simone, Otis, Etta and even some Nat King Cole (can’t get enough of his version of What’ll I Do). Nina Simone originally entered my life in the form of a Beatles song. I actually prefer her cover of “Here Comes the Sun” over the original just as is the case with “I Want a Little Sugar in My Bowl”.
While I listen to Ms. Simone, her voice just envelops me in the essence that is blues. It’s slow, sad and completely seductive. She accomplishes this without being blatantly obvious i.e. but chains and whips excite me. She was a class act, a huge activist and led a remarkable life recording over 40 albums in her 70 years on this earth. It’s my pleasure duty to make sure she has a place on Soundboard.
